Vitamin C protect Smokers' Lungs

Vitamin C to protect smokers' lungs

Kounteya Sinha, TNN, Sep 11, 2005, 01.10am ISTNEW DELHI:

Consumption of 500 mg of Vitamin C a day, in the form of tablets, leafy vegetables or citrus fruits can protect chain smokers from lung damage.

This has been discovered by scientists at Calcutta University's Dr B C Guha Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.

The scientists of this Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-funded institution have for the first time isolated the actual compound that is most dangerous in cigarette smoke — Para Benzo Semi Quinone — that causes massive oxidative damage to lung tissues.

Then, after months of tests, the scientists have also discovered how Vitamin C acts as a very good antioxidant, saving the lungs. The American Patent Office has recognised this discovery and granted the centre exclusive patent rights (US Patent number 6,929,012).

The scientists have also found that per smoke, a man inhales 200 gms of PBSQ, which according to them is a very high amount.

Speaking to TOI, project head Dr I B Chatterjee said: "Cigarette smoke has over 4,000 different compounds, 3,000 of which are present in the gas phase and about 1,000 components in the tar phase.

But nobody knew which of these are most harmful for our body. That's what...

... made us carry out tests on a guinea pig model. We made water extracts of the compounds and found that PBSQ causes most of the damage, including protein and gene destruction.

We also believe it oxydises DNA, leading to cell death. Now with this discovery, we can actually isolate the compounds in the cigarette smoke taking away the harmful effects."

Dr Chatterjee, who has been working on Vitamin C and its effects for the past 45 years, found that consuming 500 mg of the Vitamin C saves lung damage.

Another researcher added: "We found that excessive inhaling of PBSQ reduces the level of Vitamin C in the smoker's blood and tissues. So consumption of green vegetables, citrus fruits or Vitamin C tablets takes care of that.

And because Vitamin C gets readily excreted through urine, it has to be consumed thrice a day, at a total of 500 gms.

What's worse is that with cigarette, smokers always have coffee or alcohol, both of which then causes serious illnesses like bronchitis, emphysema, respiratory tract disorders, coronary heart diseases and lung cancer."

Obama is Promoting Amway

Obama said out loud that he is selling Amway. People expressed their surprise, Oppositions make that an issue. To me, if you really understand the spirit of free enterprise, and concept of Household Gold, then you would applause for Obama's for he is suggesting one of the best alternatives for people who are in the rat race, and hopping from job to job, worried for job security..... you may need to pause for awhile, and look deeper to find the treasure....

Obama to Congress: I’m Selling Amway

The President faced an uphill battle today as he addressed a skeptical congress on the benefits of his new Amway business proposal.

“It’s pretty simple,” said Obama to a room full of Democrats and Republicans with increasingly wrinkly brows, “Eighty percent of Americans are going after only ten percent of the wealth out there. We can rake in the remaining ninety percent, and all we have to do is find more people to sell other people on buying our household products.”

A growing number of Democrats began to express reservations about the President’s plan.

“The President’s plan is missing too many details,” said Democrat Heath Shuler, “I just want some specifics. Do we have to buy the products? What happens if I can’t find anybody to sell them for me? How much does the guy who sold the President on it make?”

The President used the prime time television conference before congress to explain how legitimate his Amway plan is and pressure everyone to sign up quickly.

“First of all,” said Obama, “These are good products. They’ve got a carpet cleaner that will handle dog vomit, kid urine, lipstick, chewing tobacco, and even yellow cake. It leaves the carpet looking brand new. You can’t even tell Bush or Clinton were ever in the Oval office.”

Obama went on to explain the organizational structure of his Amway venture.

“We’ve got a great Amway team put together,” said Obama, “My associates, St-*cough* -ton and Mi- *cough* –berg, they’re great guys. Our parent company is Lo- *cough hack cough cough* associates. Good guys. All of ‘em.”

Republicans were completely against the plan from the start.

“This is complete and total horse fop,” said Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele, “If he stuck this crap in a bag and lit it on fire on my porch, I wouldn’t even step on it. Not like last time. I’ll still get you for that, Biden. I heard you laughing in my bushes.”

The President expressed frustration at the Republican opposition.

“I can’t believe these guys would oppose my plan,” said Obama, “Millions of Americans will lose their opportunity to buy exclusive products from us. These are products they can’t live without. I’ve got thousands of people ready to sell them to you, and Steele and his buddies have to act like a bunch of prudes. Fine. When the country goes bankrupt, I’m blaming you.”

Obama concluded his remarks to congress with an audible “Hmph,” then retired back to the White House to join his kids in time for Stromboli night.
